What is Judo?

Judo, meaning "gentle way" in Japanese, is a modern martial art and combat sport that originated in Japan in the late 19th century. Founded by Jigoro Kano, judo emphasizes the use of balance, leverage, and technique rather than sheer strength to overcome opponents.

At its core, judo promotes the principles of maximum efficiency and mutual welfare. Practitioners, known as judoka, learn a wide range of throwing techniques (nage-waza), grappling techniques (katame-waza), and submission holds (shime-waza and kansetsu-waza).

In addition to its physical aspects, judo also instills important values such as respect, discipline, and sportsmanship. Through structured training, judoka not only develop their physical skills but also cultivate mental fortitude and emotional resilience.

Judo's global popularity is further amplified by its status as an Olympic sport. Since its debut in the Olympics in 1964, judo has been a staple of the Games, showcasing the athleticism, strategy, and spirit of its practitioners on the world stage.

Judo is practiced by people of all ages and skill levels, making it a versatile and inclusive martial art. Whether you're looking to improve your fitness, learn self-defense techniques, compete at the highest level, or simply engage in a fulfilling and dynamic activity, judo offers something for everyone.
